What we use your personal information for
Account creation and maintenance
When you first register to use the BetterPoints App, we ask you to provide personal details to get you started. This includes your name, email address, year of birth, location, and postal code. We also ask you to create a secure password for accessing the BetterPoints App and protecting your account.
App availability and functions
Age
The BetterPoints App is not intended to be used by persons under the age of thirteen.
Availability and functionality,
When you use the BetterPoints App, you will be invited to participate in activities (like surveys and tracking journeys) based on where you live, your age and gender. We collect these details so you get the most appropriate invitations and get the most out of your experience with the BetterPoints App.
Tracking your activities
A key function of the BetterPoints App is the ability for you to track and monitor your activities. This allows you to participate in activities and earn BetterPoints. The tracking function also allows you to better understand your travel and transport habits, as well as your physical activity.
Your activities are recorded by the BetterPoints App using location tracking technology. For each activity this works out the route taken, distance travelled, and the activity type, like driving, taking public transport, walking or cycling. When you first register, you are asked if you want to turn on automatic tracking. If you do, your device will automatically track, map, and record your activities. The personal information relating to your activities (like location information) will be used in the ways described in this Statement.
To turn tracking off, press play in the BetterPoints App and slide to “off”, or go to the locations settings on your device and disable tracking for the BetterPoints App.
Sending notifications
The BetterPoints App will occasionally send you notifications using your email address. These notifications will relate to the administration of your account or the use of the BetterPoints App.
Surveys
We will also ask you to take part in surveys through BetterPoints App. You do not need to take part but if you do the information collected will be used for research, modelling, analytics, and statistics - as further explained in the particular survey.
Personal information you provide about others in a survey will be used in the ways set out in this Statement or the survey. Please let the other person know you are providing their personal information, get their permission to share that information, and let them know about this Statement.
Rewards and prizes
You can earn rewards or win prizes based on your activities and how you use the BetterPoints App. We will use personal information about your activities (such as date, time, duration, type of activity and route taken), and your participation in surveys, challenges, and events to support those activities and provide you with rewards. The outcomes of challenges can be published in the BetterPoints timeline – but we do not disclose information that will identify you.
Research, Modelling, Analytics, and statistics
As well as supporting your goals through programmes, challenges and events, the BetterPoints App lets us collect and use information that helps inform our research, or the research of sponsors of BetterPoints hosted programmes.
This research focusses on travel behaviour, improving health and well-being, and environmental sustainability.
The personal information we use for research, modelling, analytical, and statistical purposes, will only be used as part of combined information and data.
When you agree to joining a specific BetterPoints hosted programme, we will provide further details of how your personal information will be used in connection with that programme before you enrol. You can then decide whether or not you wish to join that programme.
